The 8 parts of speech



Parts of speech are groups of words classified by their role in a sentence. The eight parts of speech are noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition conjuction and interjection. 

The parts of speech indicate how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatical within the sentence. 

1.Noun: A word that names a person,place, or a thing. 

2. Pronoun: A word that replaces a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition and make writing clearer and more concise. Eg. "he", "she"etc.

3. Verb: A wod used to describe an action. Eg. "run" , "sing".

4. Adjective: A word that describes a noun or a noun phrase.

5. Adverb: A word or an expression that generally  modifies a verb, an adverb, a determiner, a clause, a preposition or a sentence. 

6. Preposition: A word or group of words eg "in" "on"etc. that shows the relationship between a noun,pronoun or phrase and other words in a sentence, typically indicating location, time, direction or purpose. 

7. Conjuction: A part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses in the same clause.

8. Interjection: A word or phrase that expresses  a sudden feeling, emotion or reaction and is grammatically independent fromtge rest of the sentence.
